After we left the beautiful gorge it was time to visit the “hidden” treasure of Potamitissa village, a very old bridge located insight the forest! If it hadn’t been for our host Xenophontas we wouldn’t be able to locate the bridge. It is well hidden inside the forest with no visual contact from the country road above and of course no sign indicating its exact location.
As soon as we left our car we we walked a very narrow and dangerous path inside the forest, down the slope, to reach the river. A few minutes later a beautiful jungle-like scenery surrounded us. The river still had water despite it was summertime and as we learned trouts live in those waters!
We approached the bridge which probably dates back a few hundreds of years and perhaps it’s part of the medieval bridges of Cyprus. Unfortunately it is not in good condition as the middle part has fallen, but it was great to see one of the least known bridges of Cyprus in such an environment!
As we walked further into the the forest along the river we had the chance to see various local flowers and plants, some we had not seen before, and with healing properties. Furthermore we saw a huge nest at one of the trees which probably belongs to an eagle species found in the area.
As we continued exploring the area we got more and more excited and it is definitely a must visit sight for nature and history lovers! Please though be careful as approaching the location is not very easy.
